Masoud Barzani arrives in Amman to attend economic forum

AMMAN – Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani arrived on Friday afternoon in the Jordanian capital Amman where he will attend an economic forum.

Head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Barzani is accompanied by head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s department of foreign relations Falah Mustafa and KDP politburo secretary Fazil Mirani. They were met at the airport by Jordan’s Prince Faisal bin Hussein.

Barzani no longer holds elected office since his term as president of the KRG ended in 2017, but he remains an influential figure in Kurdish and Iraqi politics as head of the KDP and enjoys close relations with international allies.

Jordan “is one of the important countries which has good relations with Kurdistan and we will hopefully develop these relations,” Mirani told Rudaw.

Barzani visited Amman in January where he met with King Abdullah II and Jordan’s military chiefs.

On this trip, the Kurdish delegation will attend the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa, hosted by Jordan at the Dead Sea. More than 1,000 government, business, and civil society figures will convene to discuss cooperation in the face of regional challenges.

Environmental degradation and climate change, peace and reconciliation, and youth unemployment are on the agenda of the two-day forum that runs Saturday and Sunday under the theme ‘Building New Platforms of Cooperation.’
