ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two children were found drowned in a pond northeast of Erbil on Thursday, one day after they went missing.
Siyaban Mahmoud, 11, and Dlovan Sabah, 10, lived in Mala Omar village and were found in the pond by local Soran Jarjes. Access to the site is blocked by wire fence.
Jarjes said he found the friends on the opposite sides of the pond. The pond is deep and few people dare swim there, he said.
“This pond is very dangerous. It includes fish and snakes. It is also very deep. I have not seen anyone swimming here. The place they swam was deep too.”
The children’s families told Rudaw that they were unaware that the boys had gone out.
“They were both friends,” said Siyaban’s father Mahmoud Nadr.
