Erbil to have 24 hour electricity for Ramadan: official

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Erbil will provide round-the-clock electricity during Ramadan.

Erbil's central district mayor said the 24-hour service will come from a combination of government electricity and private generators and warned that providers who fail to comply will face legal measures.

"We have spoken with owners of private generators. We have decided that as of today, whenever there is governmental electricity outage, the owners of private generators should provide electricity for the citizens," Nabaz Abdulhamid told Rudaw.

Last week, KRG's Ministry of Electricity said they were aiming for 15 hours of national electricity during Ramadan.

"This decision will be valid until the end of Ramadan. Erbil's citizens shouldn't be without electricity. Private generator owners will have to adhere to the decision, otherwise they will face legal measures," Abdulhamid warned.

The Kurdistan Region suffers from a chronic shortage of electricity.
