ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Erbil police have arrested one of the two men involved in an attack on a woman and her elderly mother that was caught on camera. The main perpetrator of the crime is still at large.
Security camera footage of a violent attack by a man against a mother and daughter went viral on social media platforms, as conversations spread in the Kurdistan Region about gender-based violence and honor killings.
The footage shows an elderly mother and her widowed daughter being violently attacked by a man, as the second man watches from a distance before walking out of the house where the attack happened.
"One of the men was the deceased husband's brother, and the other was in debt to the woman's family, he pays them a little bit of money every month [...] The brother-in-law was there as a "witness" of the process of delivering the money," Erbil Police spokesperson Hogir Aziz told Rudaw's Dlnia Rahman on Wednesday.
After a complaint was filed by the two women, the police issued an arrest warrant against the attackers, Aziz claimed.
The first man has been arrested, but the search for the brother-in-law, who was the individual directly involved in the violence, continues.
