ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A child has drowned in Erbil’s Sami Abdulrahman park on Wednesday.

Aris Mohammed, 8 years old, is from Ramadi. His family was on holiday in Kurdistan.

Dr. Saman Barzinji, director general of Erbil Health, confirmed the news to Rudaw. The boy’s body was taken to Erbil’s emergency hospital and then to the forensics department.

This is the first drowning in the park, but the second such incident in Erbil province this week.

On the weekend, another tourist drowned in the Choman River. A young Kurdish man also died trying to rescue her.

The Kurdistan Region is a popular tourist destination drawing many Iraqis eager to escape the summer heat and relax in the region’s cool mountains.
