ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Health professionals from across the world are in Erbil this week for a three-day conference hosted by Hawler Medical University, examining new medical advances and ways to improve the training of young doctors in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Opening on Wednesday morning, the Third International Conference of the College of Medicine was organized in collaboration with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from the United Kingdom.
“One of the advantages of the conference and the College of Medicine is that all disciplines and all branches of medicine will be involved. So it will be a very diverse conference,” Professor Ali Al Dabbagh, Dean of the College of Medicine and president of the conference, told Rudaw English.
The conference features 16 keynote speakers from the UK, the US, France, Spain, and Austria, as well as speakers from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
“In addition to the keynote lecturers we will have about 40 plus research works from inside and outside Iraq,” Al Dabbagh added.
Seven workshops will take place, split between the Rotana Hotel and Hawler Hospital.
“This is the first day and we have a very important workshop on the assessment in medical education and an assessment of medical students,” Al Dabbagh explained. “This is an area we need a lot of development in.”
Other workshops include Principles of Good Medical Practice, Principle of Assessment in Medical Education, Introduction to Interventional Radiology, How to Set Up a Modern Standard Obesity Treatment Center, Child Abuse, and Advances in Medical Education.
Staff will also benefit from the conference, Al Dabbagh said.
“This will be a training opportunity,” he said. “One benefit is to build up our education as well as a lot of scientific research which will benefit the community.”
