Remembering first president of the Kurdish Republic of Mahabad

The founder of the Republic of Mahabad was executed 71 years ago by the ruling dynasty in Iran for treason.

Muhammed was hanged by the military in the center of the city (Chwarchira Square) on March 31, 1947 — despite not fighting against the Iranians.

His dream for an independent Kurdish state continues to be remembered by Kurds.

"Any nation that does not have unity and harmony will always be ruled by enemies. You, the Kurdish nation, are not any less than the nations on Earth, but you actually are ahead of these nations who have found freedom in goodness, courage, and being accomplished. The nations that saved themselves from the oppression of their enemies are like you, but those who have saved themselves were united," reads Muhammed's last will and testimony.

The Kurdistan Region's referendum in 2017 proved Kurdish aspirations for independence are not extinguished, as 93 percent of voters overwhelmingly ticked 'Yes' for separation from Baghdad.

Many cities across greater Kurdistan have streets named for the revolutionary and the short-lived Soviet-backed republic.

Muhammed also founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran.
