Khor Mor gas field targeted with rockets: Official

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province was targeted with two rockets on Wednesday months after similar attacks against the field were ceased, a top Kurdish official said.    

Ahmed Mufti, Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) natural resources deputy minister, told Rudaw that Khor Mor, a key gas field in Chamchamal town which is operated by the UAE-based Dana Gas, was hit with two rockets, adding that the security forces have launched an investigation into the incident. 

A local official told Rudaw on the condition of anonymity that the incident took place at 9:30 pm by two Katyusha rockets fired from Tuz Khurmatu district, hitting near a place where the company's employees were resting.

KRG's natural resources ministry said in a statement that "a number of rockets" hit the field "but did not cause any casualties or material damages."

It added that the government and Dana Gas officials are monitoring the situation "to prevent any impact on the production of gas and power." 

The field frequently came under rocket and drone attacks last year but the latest one is the first in months. 

The Kurdistan Region was facing an unprecedented number of rocket and drone attacks last year, mostly blamed on Iran-backed militias.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said in June 2022 that he was troubled by the attacks on Khor Mor, noting that additional security forces would be deployed to the area.

Khor Mor field produces 452 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, according to Dana Gas.
