ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The politburos of Kurdistan Region’s feuding ruling parties will meet on Sunday to hash out their differences around delayed parliamentary elections.
The meeting between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) will take place in Dabashan, Sulaimani province for discussions building on talks they have had over the past couple of months, PUK media reported.
The KDP and PUK are long-time rivals that have a fragile agreement to share power in the Kurdistan Region. Tensions between them have escalated recently over several issues and their disagreements have created a political hindrance. Their arguing over the election law and electoral commission prevented the vote being held last year and led to the parliament controversially extending its term for an extra year.
The head of the KDP, Masoud Barzani in May called on both parties to meet and they appeared close to a reconciliation until they sparred in the parliament over reactivation of the electoral commission and the legislature was dissolved following a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court that the parliament's self-extension was unconstitutional.
Sunday’s meeting will be their third since May.
Earlier this month, a delegation from the PUK headed by party leader Bafel Talabani met in Erbil with a KDP delegation, whose representation was led by politburo secretary Fazel Mirani. The meeting ended with no agreement. Talabani left visibly unhappy, but Mirani said the meeting was “positive” and they saw eye-to-eye on many different topics while acknowledging there is a lot of work still to be done.
