ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Rudaw Media Network is celebrating its 6th anniversary on May 29, 2019. However, people and media experts have said Rudaw has achieved 60 years worth of work in professionalizing and globalizing Kurdish media. Prior to its start, many people claimed that 'Kurds could not have a news television channel that broadcasts 24/7.’ Rudaw Media Network proved otherwise. On many occasions during the past six years, the world’s distinguished media agencies needed to use media outputs produced by Rudaw’s tireless Kurdistani teams throughout Kurdistan and sometimes abroad in order to strengthen their coverage. American and European television channels and digital media outlets brought Rudaw products to peoples’ homes across the world—demonstrating the influence and strength of Rudaw’s coverage.

The sacrifice and tireless efforts by our staff made it possible for Rudaw Media Network to proudly achieve great things. During the past six years, Rudaw journalists covered the war on the Islamic State (ISIS), the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016, the Kurdistan Region's referendum, the subsequent events in Kirkuk, as well as events in Erbil, New York, Brussels, Paris, and other world capitals. They conveyed information extensively and meticulously to the people of Kurdistan. Through their questions and determination, they continued to convey the unheard voices of the people of Kurdistan to decision makers of the world.

We are sad that Shifa Gardi is no longer with us while Rudaw marks our 6th anniversary, as it has been nominated and received international awards. Through sacrificing her life while on duty, Gardi showed the success story of Rudaw. And we are still waiting for news about our colleague Farhad Hamo, who was ambushed by ISIS militants while on duty. His fate remains unknown to date. Last year, our colleague Jihan Damitran unfortunately died while on duty.

Rudaw Media Network would like to thank the people of Kurdistan for their support, and for encouraging us to continue moving forward. You deserve to always be informed with the whole picture, from Rudaw. Your expectation for Rudaw to further broaden its aims deserves to be met as well, and it will be.
