Asayish seize 11,000 counterfeit car batteries in Erbil
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish security forces (Asayish) in Erbil confiscated 11,000 fake automobile batteries and detained two suspects, they announced on Monday.
The Asayish stated a company imported the batteries from Iran and Turkey and later replaced stickers on the batteries with fake ones.
“The ampere number of the batteries was changed from 25-30 to 60 on the stickers,” read the statement. “The company sold more than 20,000 of these batteries in the Kurdistan Region’s markets.”
The Asayish statement detailed that following an investigation the owner of the company and a foreign worker were detained in relation to the counterfeit scheme. The Erbil operation resulted in the confiscation of 11,000 fake batteries, according to the security forces.
Batteries labeled with the wrong amperage could pose safety risks and not perform as expected.
The Kurdistan Region primarily relies on neighboring countries to meet local demand; however, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has also incentivized investors to reduce imports and increase domestic manufacturing.
In April, the Maya battery factory in Sulaimani ventured into international exports by shipping 1,200 to Jordan and announced plans in the coming months to export more to Gulf and European countries.
