Shingal authorities to enact measures to prevent mass graves from being burnt

This Shepherd is due to show us a mass grave in western Shingal.

A fire which started near a mass grave there spread and consumed that grave, burning the bodies in it.

Residents of Shingal say that the sooner the mass graves are unearthed the better.

But Shingal officials say that for the time being they are only able to protect some of them from being, either accidentally or intentionally, burnt.

According to the Head of High Committee of Recognizing Shingal Genocide some 30 mass graves – all filled with the victims of Islamic States’ (ISIS) rampage in that region – have been found in the Shingal region to date.

They say that they need three years to unearth all of these graves, identify everyone in them and then give them proper burials.

The Committee of Recognizing Shingal Genocide say that the financial crisis in Kurdistan Region coupled with the fact Iraq is not a member of International Criminal Court are the primary reasons these mass graves have yet to be unearthed.
