ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least one passenger was killed and 27 others were injured on Tuesday when a bus overturned near the town of Koya in Erbil province, a health official said.
“One person was killed [and] 27 others injured, when a bus overturned near the village of Kalka Smaq in Koya,” Kamaran Sheikhani, Koya’s health director, told Rudaw, adding that some of the injured passengers are in unstable condition.
The injured received treatment at Koya’s general hospital, according to Sheikahni.
Koya is a mountainous area, where some roads can be narrow and steep.
Car accidents are a common occurrence in the Kurdistan Region in comparison to many countries.
Over 3,700 traffic accidents occurred across the Kurdistan Region in 2022, killing at least 445 people and injuring 7,250 others, according to the most recent data from the Region’s general traffic police directorate.
Bus accidents are especially frequent during the tourist seasons in the Kurdistan Region, when thousands of people from central and southern Iraq visit the Region to enjoy its picturesque nature, attractions, and comparatively lower temperatures.
Earlier in August, a minibus driver was killed and 11 passengers were injured after his vehicle overturned in Sulaimani’s Khalakan subdistrict.
