PM Barzani joins Peshmerga fundraising campaign

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and his deputy, Qubad Talabani, pledged support on Monday for a major Rudaw fundraising campaign for the families of Peshmerga fighters killed in battle.

“This campaign by Rudaw is great work and Mr Qubad and I both support it,” said Barzani.

The initiative, called Ranji Shahidan,  was launched on Saturday by Rudaw TV presenter Ranj Sangawi to assist the families of Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers killed in the past several months in the war against the Islamic State, or ISIS.

Politicians, government officials and leading businessmen across the Kurdistan region have since joined Sangawi’s campaign, many pledging donations to the effort and urging their supporters to stand by the families of the martyred Peshmerga.

“This campaign is very important and people across the world launch such campaigns to raise funds when they are facing a situation like ours,” said Yousif Muhammad, Kurdistan Region’s speaker of parliament, on Monday.

Muhammad also called on Kurdistan’s business leaders and investors to support the campaign.

“The goal of this campaign is clear. It is to raise funds for the families of those Peshmerga soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our peace,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Peshmerga, an estimated 1,200 Peshmerga fighters have been killed since August in the ongoing conflict and 5,000 others wounded.
