ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Internal security forces (Asayish) in Sulaimani on Saturday announced the arrest of two suspected Islamic State (ISIS) members in separate operations in the city of Sulaimani.
The pair were arrested on Friday “after collecting information and monitoring the location of the wanted suspects in two separate operations,” the Sulaimani Asayish directorate said in a statement.
One of the suspects had fought for ISIS and been wounded, according to the Asayish.
ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi land in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in the country in 2017, but it continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across several provinces.
Thousands of people have been detained across Iraq since 2014 for suspected links to terrorist groups, including ISIS, and hundreds have been executed.
On Saturday, Iraqi military intelligence forces in Kirkuk province said they had arrested two suspected ISIS members in coordination with Sulaimani anti-terror forces. Earlier in August, Sulaimani Asayish forces arrested three ISIS suspects.
The United States military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said that at least two ISIS operatives were killed and an additional 24 detained in partnered operations with their allies in Iraq during the month of July.
