ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish army on Saturday bombarded bordering areas in Duhok province following the death of one of its soldiers in the province, a villager told Rudaw.

The Turkish defence ministry on Saturday said in a statement that one of its soldiers was injured by an improvised explosive device in Duhok province on Friday and succumbed to his wounds the next day.

The explosion took place in a bordering area where a Turkish military operation against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is ongoing.

Kiyan Abdullah, a resident of Kani Masi subdistrict in Amedi town, told Rudaw on Saturday that Turkey bombarded several villages in the area from midnight to 9:00 am.

The bombardment did not cause any casualties but has spread fear in these villages.

Another Turkish soldier was killed by the PKK in the province on Thursday as the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was holding meetings with the Kurdish officials in Erbil during his first trip to Iraq and the Region since he assumed the position. Seven people were killed when Turkey bombarded a bordering area in Erbil province on the same day. The Erbil-based counter-terrorism forces said the dead were PKK fighters.

He thanked the Kurdish authorities for supporting them in the fight against the PKK and called on the Iraqi government to recognize the group as a terrorist organisation.

PKK is an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. It is designated a terrorist organization by Ankara, which has launched numerous operations against the group and its alleged offshoots in the Kurdistan Region and Syria.
