Weapons storage explodes near Erbil, no casualties

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A big sound has been heard in parts of Erbil caused by an explosion in a weapons storage near Erbil International Airport.

An official from the Civil Defense told Rudaw it did not result in any casualties, adding that the sound was caused by an explosion at a weapons storage that belonged to the Zeravani Peshmerga force.

Aziz Waisi, commander of the force, also confirmed the explosion and that it did not result in any casualties.

Ahmad Koyi, a commander from the Zeravani force, said that old weapons captured or taken from ISIS militants are kept in the storage.

He added that the incident is not terror related.

Koyi said that the incident is similar to another explosion that happened earlier this month.

On August 5, three Zeravani Peshmerga suffered minor injuries after a weapons depot in Erbil caught fire causing a loud explosion that could be heard kilometers away. The incident was not an attack.

There were rumors that gunfire or the explosion were heard by the US Consulate in Erbil, but an American official denied such incidents.

A US official confirmed the event was not in its Consulate in Kurdistan.

There was "no incident involving the consulate," a US Consulate spokesperson told Rudaw English.
