CPJ and Kurdish socialist party criticize PYD, PKK ban on Rudaw
The socialist Party of Kurdistan (PSK) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) both condemned a ban on the Rudaw Media Network by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) from reporting in the areas under their control.
“Banning Rudaw’s works is a violation of freedom of expression and freedom of media; an act the invaders of Kurdistan also have been frequently doing,” said PSK statement released on Friday.
Speaking to Rudaw on Friday Sharif Mansour of CPJ also condemned the ban on Rudaw and said local authorities have sent a bad message to the world given the fact that Rudaw has done a lot of reporting in the region.
“We urge officials from Cantons, PKK and PYD, don’t repeat the mistake of invaders and aggressors by banning free media. Because doing so will not benefit Kurdish nation,” it added.
The Kobani canton in Syrian Kurdistan banned the Rudaw Media Network from working in the region. It also banned journalists and freelancers from sending their work to Rudaw and warned all agencies and organizations to cut off all contacts with the media network.
The Rudaw Media Network has expressed serious concerns, in a statement released on Thursday, over the Kobani Canton’s decision and considers it a violation of freedom of media and expression in Syrian Kurdistan.
“Decisions such as this will sadden the people of Kobani, as Rudaw was the voice of the town in the world at the time of war and later during its liberation. This decision will not, of course, create a gap between Rudaw and the people of Kobani,” Rudaw statement said.
