Peshmerga repel ISIS attack near Mosul dam
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—A group of Islamic State (ISIS) militants, including two suicide bombers attacked Peshmerga positions near the Mosul dam Tuesday evening, said a Kurdish commander, but the attack was repelled and a number of militants killed.
The Peshmerga commander at Sahlij village said that the ISIS attack began with two suicide bombers in the villages of Jasa and Sahlij near the dam at 10:40 pm.
Before the suicide bombers reached their target they were both shot by the Peshmerga, he added.
He stated that the Peshmerga responded to the ISIS attack with heavy fire and the ISIS force “left many bodies behind in the battlefield within short period of time, especially the bodies of those who got near Peshmerga positions.”
“Coalition airplanes started flying over the area 30 minutes after the fighting started in order to target the ISIS,” said the commander.
He said the Peshmerga forces suffered no casualties.
The town of Wanke is currently under ISIS control with the Peshmerga forces only several kilometers away at Sahlij village.
