5 ISIS killed in raid by security forces in Kirkuk

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least five ISIS militants were killed by Kurdish security forces Tuesday night in Kirkuk, as part of military raids on ISIS militants who had infiltrated the city Friday.

“Security forces carried out a raid on the village of Seri Tapa in Laylan town in Kirkuk,” Brig Gen. Sarhad Nadir, chief of Kirkuk Suburban Police, told Rudaw. “Five militants were killed in the raid.”

Qadir said they “suspect there will be a few more ISIS militants in the area.”

Warplanes from the US-led coalition are in coordination with security forces in this regard, he added.

An estimated 100 ISIS militants staged an attack on the city Friday. Clashes continued through Saturday, and on Sunday security forces shot one suspected militant while a second detonated a suicide belt.

On Monday, The Kurdistan Region’s Security Council announced that the leader of the group was killed and another eight ISIS militants hiding inside Kirkuk were discovered and captured.

Tens of people, including many from the security forces, were killed in the attack on the city.

Security forces and residents now face the task of cleaning up and restoring a sense of security to the city.
