New school year starts in Kurdistan Region
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Students across the Kurdistan Region returned to classrooms on Wednesday, as bells rang marking the start of the new school year.
The new academic year commenced with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani ringing the ceremonial bell in a school in Erbil province’s Koya district.
“I congratulate all the students on the start of the new year, and I thank all the teachers for their resilience efforts in educating the next generations,” Barzani said.
Prime Minister Barzani wished “a year full of peace and progress and happiness for all students in the Kurdistan Region.”
Schools across the Kurdistan Region welcomed back over 1.65 million students on Wednesday, according to data from the Kurdistan Teachers’ Union.
The number of students has increased compared to last year's statistics published by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) education ministry.
Around 1.63 million students studied in the Kurdistan Region’s schools in the 2023-2024 school year, according to the ministry’s data.
There are about 5,700 schools in the Kurdistan Region, according to Ahmed Gamiyani, the head of the Kurdistan Teachers’ Union. The KRG has built around 162 schools and kindergartens since the commencement of the 9th cabinet in 2019, according to data obtained by Rudaw from the education ministry.
