RANYA, Kurdistan Region - As a fresh wave of drought hits the Kurdistan Region, Darbandi Ranya or the strait of Ranya sees an increase in water levels compared to the years before.
A popular tourist attraction, Darbandi Ranya is home to Lake Dukan, a reservoir on the Little Zab. It is located four kilometers (2.5 miles) east of the town of Ranya within the Raparin administration in Sulaimani province.
The administration saw high levels of rainfall, with about 632 millimeters falling in the town so far this year, Raparin administration’s agriculture director Khalid Hassan told Rudaw on Monday.
Hassan links the reasoning for the increase in water levels to the “historical” rainfall levels the administration saw in 2019.
