4.3-magnitude quake rocks Kurdistan Region: Ministry
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A 4.3-magnitude earthquake shook the Kurdistan Region early Saturday morning with an epicenter between Erbil and Mosul, according to Kurdistan Region’s communications ministry. Some people reported feeling a second tremor as well.
“The depth of the quake was 5km and was felt in most of Kurdistan Region’s cities,” the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Transportation and Communications said in a statement.
There are no reports of injuries or damage.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre also reported the quake, saying its epicenter was Mosul city and it occurred at 2:25am local time.
Many people living near the border of Erbil and Nineveh provinces confirmed to Rudaw that they felt two quakes. In videos submitted to Rudaw, some people fired guns into the air to alert others of the tremor.
After two large earthquakes earlier this month in southeastern Turkey killed over 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria, the area has been rocked by frequent aftershocks and new earthquakes, sparking alarm among people who are afraid to return to their homes and are living in the streets or in tents.
