ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Rockets targeted the facilities of a media agency in Duhok on Tuesday, disrupting its live television and radio broadcasts, according to a statement from the agency which blamed the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for the “sabotaging action.”
Two rockets launched from Duhok’s Gali Zakho targeted the facilities of Khani media agency on Tuesday, without resulting in any casualties, only material damages, the agency said.
The facilities host around 10 radio and television stations, including Rudaw Radio. It is located near a Turkish military base, which was the subject of another rocket attack earlier this month.
The agency claimed that the PKK were behind the attack in a statement on Tuesday, referring to it as a “sabotaging action.”
“This afternoon, a broadcasting base for our channel was the subject of a rocket attack from PKK gunmen… We assure the perpetrators that a media broadcasting base is a sign of the Kurdistan Region’s civility and progression and its rightful case, and possesses no threat to any sides and there are no excuses for targeting it,” the statement read.
The agency asked the PKK to reconsider its politics, saying that such attacks only harm the sovereignty of the Region and serve its “enemies and occupiers.”
“The act has been carried out by PKK guerrillas. Two rockets were launched and one of them hit the agency’s station and caused material damages,” Mushir Ahmed, the mayor of Zakho told Rudaw on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Shinye village on the border of Duhok province’s Akre was bombarded by suspected Turkish warplanes without resulting in any casualties.
The PKK is an armed group composed of Kurdish opposition fighters, that is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey. The country frequently targets PKK positions beyond its southern border with the Kurdistan Region.
