KDP polling with large lead ahead of Kurdish parties
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A week into official campaigning for Iraq's parliamentary elections, a poll predicts the KDP will take nearly 42 percent of the vote in the Kurdistan Region, followed by the PUK, Gorran, CDJ, KIU, New Generation, and Komal.
The Kurdistan Institute for Polls surveyed 2,986 eligible voters in Erbil, Sulaimani and Duhok provinces — 58 percent said they would take part in the elections while 27.9 percent said they would not vote.
There are 3,144,730 eligible voters in the Kurdistan Region, according to the Iraqi election commission.
By percentage, the KDP is forecasted to win 41.85 percent of the vote across the three provinces. Gorran polled at 13.78 percent, PUK at 7.92, CDJ at 4.65, KIU at 4.48, the New Generation at 4.42, and Komal at 1.95, with smaller and non-Kurdish parties and lists making up the rest.
They are competing for 44 seats in the Kurdistan Region — 18 in Sulaimani, 15 in Erbil, and 11 in Duhok. Those figures do not include one seat in Erbil and one in Duhok dedicated to the minority quota system.
Voters in Kirkuk, Nineveh, and abroad were not polled. KDP has announced it will not field a list in "occupied" Kirkuk.
Gorran, Komal, and the Coalition for Democracy and Justice (CDJ) are running on a joint Homeland (Nishtiman) list in the disputed areas. Kirkuk also receives one minority quota seat.
In the 2014, the PUK won 6 seats in Kirkuk, while the KDP won 2.
The Kurdistan Institute for Polls was established in 2005. It has so far conducted 90 polls.
