1.7 million tourists visit Kurdistan in four months: KRG

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Tuesday announced that 1.7 million tourists have visited the Region since the beginning of the New Year. 

The government said that 200 thousand tourists visited the Kurdistan Region during the Islamic feast, Eid al-Fitr, which began on April 10, adding that the total number of tourists visiting the Region since the beginning of 2024 is 1.7 million. 

The KRG did not elaborate where the tourists came from but people from Iraq’s southern and central provinces often make up the majority of them. 

Ibrahim Abdulmajeed, head of media and relations at the Kurdistan Region’s tourism board, told Rudaw on Tuesday that this figure makes them happy, given that the last four months are not considered the “golden season” for tourism.

The Region’s tourism season begins in May, he added. 

Based on data from the tourism board, millions of tourists visit the Region every year. 

With its relatively moderate temperature in comparison to the rest of the country and its tremendous nature, the Kurdistan Region’s tourism has been a booming sector in recent years.

The KRG plans to attract 20 million tourists per year by 2030.
