Two Erbil teams competing for this year’s Kurdistan Premier League football cup

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two clubs from Erbil meet Saturday for a chance at the annual Kurdistan Premier League (KPL), the Kurdistan Region’s top football championship.

Hawler and Hawler Peshmerga meet this evening for the final game of the league at the Franso Hariri Stadium.

The Hawler Peshmerga club is seen to have a better chance of stealing this year’s championship, with one point above its rival.

That means, if the match ends without any goals, Hawler Peshmerga will take home the cup. But Hawler has to beat its rival on goals for the title.

The KPL is held annually, with first, second and third divisions. There are also youth and youngster championships, plus the Kurdistan Cup.

Over the past three consecutive years, the Zeravani Football Club has been the champion of the KPL. But this year the team did not perform well, dropping out in the early weeks of the tournament.

This year 14 teams began the competition for the KPL, but the Sulaimani Football Club withdrew due to economic reasons.
