ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region’s traffic police on Sunday said that motorcycles used by food delivery companies must be registered and meet safety requirements to avoid fines and penalties.

“Any motorcycle that does not meet safety requirements should not be operated by companies, otherwise the company will bear responsibility for violations and financial penalties of unidentified and unregistered motorcycles,” the Kurdistan Region’s traffic police directorate said in a statement.

The directorate called on companies to utilize “electric and quiet motorcycles” in the city centers to preserve the environment and limit noise pollution.

“For those motorcyclists who have worked for companies in the past and committed traffic violations resulting in penalties, by identifying the company’s special logo, the responsibility for negligence falls on the companies,” the statement said.

It also offered a discount until the end of the year for motorcycle violations and stressed that companies would face penalties if their fines were not paid by the deadline, including a suspension of operations.

Traffic police in the Kurdistan Region routinely launch campaigns to crack down on unregistered and unsafe motorcycles.

While the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) banned the importation of motorcycles in 2012, motorcycles continue to be brought into the Kurdistan Region from across Iran and Iraq.
