Kurdish forces rescue Swedish teenage girl near Mosul

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Kurdish Counter-Terrorism Forces have rescued a 16-year-old Swedish girl from the Islamic State (ISIS) near Mosul.

A statement from the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) said on Tuesday that their forces rescued the young girl in an area outside Mosul on February 17.

“The Swedish National, Ms. Marlin Stivani Nivarlain, is 16 years old from Borås. She was misled by an ISIL member in Sweden to travel to Syria and later to Mosul.” said the Kurdish security.

According to the statement “Swedish authorities and members of her family” had contacted the Kurdish Security Council “to assist in locating and rescuing her from ISIL.”

Niyarlain is currently in the Kurdistan Region and “is provided the care afforded to her under international law.”

The KRSC said that “She will be transferred to Swedish authorities to return home once necessary arrangements are put place.”
