11 ISIS killed in clash with Peshmerga south of Mosul
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – At least 11 ISIS militants were killed in clashes with Peshmerga forces on the Makhmour front on Friday, said a Peshmerga commander.
“At 7pm ISIS attacked Peshmerga positions on the Makhmour front,” said Sirwan Barzani, commander of the Gwer-Makhmour frontline, south of Mosul. “Eleven ISIS militants were killed in the fight.”
Barzani added that the fight “lasted for two hours and the attackers were defeated.”
He explained that the situation has been brought under control and “warplanes from the US-led coalition assisted the Peshmerga in the fight.”
The attack comes while heavy clashes were ongoing between Peshmerga and ISIS militants who had infiltrated the city of Kirkuk in the early hours of Friday. Dozens of civilians and security forces were wounded and a handful were killed.
The major offensive to retake the city of Mosul from ISIS is in its fifth day.
