Dead body of woman found dumped in Zakho: police

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Police in Zakho independent administration on Friday found the dead body of an unidentified woman dumped in the vicinity of a village, police spokesperson told Rudaw.

Zakho police published blurred footage of a dead woman lying on the ground in the vicinity of Hassan Rashol village. Nashhat Salman, spokesperson for the police, told Rudaw's Yusuf Musa late Friday that they had not identified the woman yet.

“Police are looking for the perpetrator,” he noted.

Musa Hassan, mukhtar (chieftain) of the village, told Rudaw that the woman “is not from our village. It is not clear where she was killed.”

Amir Ali, spokesperson for Zakho’s health directorate, told Rudaw that “the dead body of the woman has been transferred to Duhok’s autopsy department because the incident is a great crime and [authorities] in Zakho could not identify her.”

Several femicides have been reported recently in the Kurdistan Region despite the Region’s efforts to end gender-based violence and so-called honor killings.

A woman, originally from Zakho, was stabbed by one of her brothers 28 times in Erbil late Monday over a dispute dating back to 2014.
