Collapsing spectator stands injures 15 in Erbil
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Fifteen people were injured when the spectator stands collapsed at a car race in Erbil on Friday, an official told Rudaw.
“In the incident, 15 people were injured, with most cases involving fractures. The first aid teams were at the site of the incident and provided primary treatment to all the injured individuals,” spokesperson for Erbil’s civic defense directorate Shakhawan Saeed told Rudaw.
The race was organized by the Erbil Automobile and Motorcycle Union.
Some of the injured needed additional care and were taken to hospital.
One witness blamed the construction of the stands, telling Rudaw they were built without proper supports. Authorities, however, have not announced the reason for the collapse.
Rallies and car races are popular in the Kurdistan Region, especially among the youth.
Earlier this year the Zakho Off-Road Group invited off-road enthusiasts from across the Kurdistan Region to a rally. Teams from Zakho, Duhok, Erbil, Barzan, Sulaimani, and Chamchamal competed in their specially adapted 4x4s.
