Sulaimani book fair does brisk business

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region - Sulaimani’s third annual international book fair opened its doors on Thursday, showcasing 400,000 different titles from nearly 200 international and local publishers.

Shoppers include the Ministry of Education which has a 40 million dinar ($27,500) budget from the prime minister to stock up school libraries. “The main goal is to support the schools in the Kurdistan Region, especially those in Sulaimani province,” said Education Minister Alan Hama Saeed.

The 10-day long fair at the Sulaimani Expo Centre is good business for booksellers. Karzan Ahmed, who owns a bookshop in Chamchamal, said he sold more than 4,000 books in the first six hours.

“We have received nearly 1,700 to 2,000 customers from different towns, including Zakho, Badinan, and Akre, as well as Duhok. Visitors speaking other languages, including Arabic, have come to the book fair,” he said.
