When ISIS captured Makhmour

When ISIS arrived in Makhmour on August 6, 2014, it planned to destroy as much as was possible and use the city as an operation base.  But two days after the ISIS incursion, the Peshmerga forces launched a decisive offensive, driving the group out of the city. Makhmour was liberated on August 8, 2014 following hour-long clashes.

Although ISIS put up a stiff resistance, the Peshmerga were also resilient.  Largely outgunned, the Kurdish soldiers attacked ISIS's armored vehicles with RPG mortars and Kalashnikov rifles.  They stormed into the city and freed it in just three hours.

This is the story of that brief occupation and the heroic Peshmerga battle to liberate the city.
