ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan region President Masoud Barzani received US Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his accompanying delegation Tuesday.
The two leaders discussed the fight against ISIS and the position of the Peshmerga on the frontlines, according to a statement released by Barzani’s office.
“We are doing a sacred duty in fighting against ISIS, because we fight an organization which does not have humanitarian consciousness,” the statement quoted Barzani as saying.
According to the statement, Barzani and Dunford exchanged ideas with regards to ISIS and Peshmerga positions on the frontlines; Dunford reportedly thanked the Kurdistan region for stopping ISIS from any further advances and favoring the US in fighting ISIS on the ground.
Kurdistan region presidency Chief-of-Staff Fuad Hussein, Qubad Talabani, deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan regional government, and Jabar Yawar, the chief of staff of the Peshmerga ministry, also attended the meeting.
