ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Marking the arrival of Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, a festival showcasing female handmade crafts and their online business products was held in the city of Sulaimani on Saturday.
Lasting four days, the Spring and Newroz festival was held in Sulaimani with 150 female entrepreneurs owning small and medium-sized businesses showcasing their products at the city’s landmark Azadi Park.
“As young business owners, this fair has given us a chance to promote our products and advance them,” Lanya Kamal, a business owner told Rudaw’s Peshawa Bakhtyar.
“It also helps us believe more in ourselves and our potential to create things”, she added.
Another part of the festival includes Kurdish traditional games and displaying movies at Azadi Park.
The four-day festival will also feature various types of activities that will run from 2pm to 10pm.
“These kinds of fairs are very important for us, as online business owners, because people can come to visit us through these fairs to see our products in person and buy them, and we can promote our products as well,” Sozan Tofiq, another female entrepreneur said.
Participation in the fair for business owners is free. Most of the vendors are occupied by women and girls who work online or at home.
On March 20, two concerts will be held at the city’s Hawary Shar Park and Salim Street Avenue and on the last day of the festival, a marathon will be held for Sulaimani’s men and women.
Kurds celebrate Newroz on March 21-23 by picnicking in the countryside and lighting bonfires with their families and loved ones. The occasion is known as the Kurdish New Year.
Celebrations and festivities are held across the Kurdistan Region with hundreds of thousands of Kurds dancing in their colorful and traditional Kurdish clothes.
