Two PKK fighters killed in Turkish airstrike in Sharbazher: mayor
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Two members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party have been confirmed killed and one injured in a Turkish airstrike on a vehicle in the Sharbazher area of Sulaimani province, a local mayor has confirmed to Rudaw.
The airstrike took place in Galala village, according to Kamaran Hassan, the mayor of the nearby town of Mawat.
A fire has broken out in the village, according to footage submitted to Rudaw by a local resident, who said the PKK vehicle was passing through the area at the time of the attack and was struck just before 7pm.
It comes less than a week after four people were killed in a Turkish airstrike on a vehicle in Sulaimani’s Halsho subdistrict.
Turkish airstrikes have time and time again targeted mountains near the Sharbazher area.
The strike on Saturday comes amid ongoing Turkish operations in Duhok province targeting the PKK. Turkey regularly conducts operations against the PKK, which it views as a terrorist organisation, both at home and in the Kurdistan Region.
Ankara conducted airstrikes near Makhmour refugee camp in Erbil province twice earlier this month, claiming to have killed two senior PKK members in separate attacks.
