ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said on Saturday that his party’s win — the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) – was important for democracy in Iraq, urging all groups to gather around a united agenda in order to gain the Kurds’ constitutional rights in Baghdad through dialogue.
“This great democratic victory under these sensitive circumstances is very meaningful for the KDP,” PM Barzani said as he congratulated members of the KDP, relatives and families of the Peshmerga forces and those killed in the war with ISIS.
Despite a low turnout across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, the KDP won 25 seats in the Iraqi parliament in last Saturday’s elections.
“I extend my gratitude to the people of Kurdistan for their big participation across Iraq and exercising their democratic right,” Barzani’s statement read, adding that the government and security forces played an instrumental role in the success of the process.
The prime minister urged all Kurdish groups to work on a united agenda before heading to Baghdad.
“For the best interest of the nations of Kurdistan and for the sake of achieving its constitutional rights and interests, we call on all parties to set aside disagreements and be prepared to meet and hold dialogue in order to form a joint agenda for a strong participation of Kurdistan in the future Iraqi government. From now on, the KDP is prepared to hold joint dialogue and do joint work,” Barzani said.
Barzani also congratulated the peoples of Iraq on the successful election while hoping that “the results of this election will lead to the formation of a new parliament and government that implement the constitution, deliver services to citizens and materialize the Iraqi citizens’ rights enshrined in the constitution.”
The Kurdish prime minister said that a government of partnership would be able to tackle all the disputes between Erbil and Baghdad and better serve Iraq’s diverse communities.
“We are prepared for constructive dialogue on the basis of the constitution in order to form a joint government that runs Iraqi affairs and authority on the basis of the principle of agreement and partnership and protection of the interests of all the Iraqi communities,” he said. “This way, we can resolve all the problems between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government.”
