HELSINKI - Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja has told Rudaw in an exclusive interview his country will have direct relations with Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and he expressed his support for the KRG’s war on terror.

Tuomioja said Saturday his country has been praising Kurdistan’s role in fighting Islamic State militants. He also announced that at least 100 people from Finland have joined ISIS, and that these people are a real threat to Finland if they return.

Tuomioja also indicated Finland will make sure its aid reaches Kurdistan directly and that there are no barriers in Finland-Kurdistan relations.

Officials from Finland’s defense ministry announced earlier in March that Helsinki is planning to send at least 50 military trainers to support Kurdish forces by summer 2015.
