CHOMAN, Kurdistan Region - A young villager in Erbil province's Choman district herds animals to make ends meet while also traveling long distances to pursue his studies.
Mohammed Nabi, 22, told Rudaw that his village in Choman does not have a night high school and he cannot leave his animals during the day. As a result, his only option is to take a long and arduous journey to Soran district to attend a night school.
"In the past, I got deprived of school for many reasons, but this didn’t make me lose interest in studying," Nabi, who is at the tenth grade, said.
His lack of access to proper education has only captivated him further to continue his studies.
"I want to herd my animals during the day and study during the night, it is really necessary to open a branch of scientific studies to Choman. For example, we will no longer need to travel all this road, and it’s also not a safe road between Choman and Soran, the road is known as the death road among us," added the shepherd.
His goal is to achieve prestigious degrees.
San'an Salih, principal of the school Nabi is studying at, said his student arrives at school in time, adding that teachers admire him.
