ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a 25 megawatt solar power plant in Erbil, aimed at providing electricity for the citizens of the Region at more affordable prices.
With an estimated cost of $100 million and an area of 590 dunams of land, the project is set to become the largest solar power plant across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
“We must pay much attention to using clean, environmentally-friendly, and reusable energy,” said PM Barzani in a speech during an event, stressing that there is still much need for further developing the Kurdistan Region’s electricity sector in order to provide 24/7 power for the citizens.
The prime minister noted that developing the electricity sector in the Kurdistan Region also requires the cooperation of the citizens, calling on the Region’s residents to power and avoid wasting power.
“The government has a program to provide electricity to the people at a lower price and with less effort,” he added.
There are currently two solar power plants in the Region generating 3 megawatts of electricity, and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has revealed plans to build an additional station, generating 100 megawatts of electricity, in Erbil province’s Soran Administration.
Iraq and the Kurdistan Region suffer from chronic electricity shortages, especially felt when summer temperatures near 50 degrees Celsius. The high temperatures also lead to a very high consumption of power.
