Barzani stresses unity in Yezidi new year message
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – In a congratulatory message to the Yezidis on their Chwarshama Soori feast, the president of the Kurdistan Region said the Yezidis are an “inseparable” part of the Kurdistan nation and they should no longer suffer persecution.
Masoud Barzani said “in light of the return of Yezidi New Year, the Chwarshama Soori feast, I warmly congratulate all of our Yezidi sisters and brothers in Kurdistan and the world.”
Chwarshama Soori, translated as Red Wednesday, marks the day that Tawuse Melek, the Peacock Angel who is God’s representative on earth, descended on the holy site of Lalish to bless the earth with fertility and renewal.
Yezidis will gather in Lalish on Wednesday to celebrate the day, many more than in the last few years after ISIS began its genocide against the community.
“The Yezidi Kurds are a dear and inseparable segment of the Kurdistan nation. Their joys and plights are that of the Kurdistan nation,” said Barzani.
“Throughout history, our Yezidi brothers and sisters have faced catastrophes due to their identity. But in their commitment to their Kurdish and religious identity, they foiled plots and oppressions against them.”
Referring to the catastrophic events the Yezidis faced under ISIS when the group brutally marched into the city of Shingal in August 2014 killing and kidnapping thousands, Barzani insisted that “no longer should any calamity and plight be repeated against our Yezidi sisters and brothers.”
The president added “thanks to God, the Peshmerga with their bravery defeated ISIS terrorists and they paid the price for their atrocities and their heads fell under the feet of the Yezidis.”
He concluded that the Kurdistan Region will always support the Yezidis and said “making decisions on their fate and future is only in their hands.”
