Historically, horses played an important role in the lives of the Kurds – they were the sole means of transportation bringing weapons and food to the Peshmerga in the mountains.

Additionally, the Marwanids effectively used mounted fighters to wage war and defend their dynasty in the 11th century in what is presently the Diyarbakir region and Kurdistan Region.

The third son of Marwan, Nasr al-Dawla Ahmad, sent a band of 5,000 horsemen to re-take Edessa (now ar-Ruha in southeastern Turkey) from Arab tribes supported by Byzantium in 1032 CE, according to historical accounts from the Syriac writer Bar Hebraeus.

Now, a 12-member group wants to renew the Kurdish spirit of horseback riding, asp swary in Kurdish.
