ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The acting leader of the PUK Kosrat Rasul underwent a second surgery in Germany and will remain in intensive care for 72 hours as he recovers.
Dr. Dara Rashid, the head of Rasul’s medical team, told Rudaw that “a second surgery was carried out for Rasul in Berlin on Friday.”
Rashid added this is expected to be the last surgery and it was only to complete work from the previous operation.
“Kosrat Rasul is in intensive care and will remain there for 72 hours,” he explained, adding that the former Kurdish VP should recover in due time.
Rasul fell ill in early November in Sulaimani a day after attending the late Patriot Union of Kurdistan (PUK) founder Jalal Talabani’s memorial service. He underwent emergency surgery in Sulaimani on November 11 for a stoppage of blood flow to his small intestine before being flown to Berlin on November 16 for further treatment.
Rasul’s Kurdish medical team described his health as “excellent” on November 21.
"The results of all medical checkups are promising," Rasheed, the head of his medical team had said at the time.
Rasul became the PUK's acting head after the death of the party's founder and leader Jalal Talabani in early October.

Since he has been receiving medical treatment in Berlin, many Kurdish politicians visited to check up on his health, chief among them Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and his deputy Qubad Talabani at the tail end of a diplomatic trip to France where they met with President Emmanuel Macron.
