Peshmerga Command: 150 sq.km liberated, 130 ISIS killed
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—The Peshmerga’s operation over Sunday and Monday was highly successful, according to a statement from the General Peshmerga Command issued on Monday confirming that the Peshmerga have retaken a large area and killed many Islamic State (ISIS) militants. The Command congratulated the people of Kurdistan, the Peshmerga forces, and the relatives of the Peshmerga who lost their lives.
“Peshmerga liberated 150 square kilometers. And according to the latest record, 130 ISIS militants were killed and many others wounded,” reads the statement.
A group of villages on Khazir and Gwer frontlines were liberated over the two days. “In the operations Qarqsha, Qritakh, Abzakh, Hamra, Tal Hamid, Shanaf, Omarmandan, Hasurya, Kanashi Gawra and Kanashi Bchuk villages were liberated,” the statement confirmed.
The Peshmerga General Command thanked those Peshmerga units and security forces that participated in the operations, “the Zeravani command, special forces, Gulan forces, Rozh forces, anti-terror forces, units of Barzan, Erbil, Garmyan, Suleimani, Kawa, environment protection units, first supportive unit, Erbil security, Erbil protection unit, 10 and 14 brigades, and the special units of the Makhmour and Gwer frontlines.”
The Command also thanked the ministry of health units, interior ministry helicopters, and volunteer forces, as well as the “global coalition in supporting the Peshmerga operations that played important role in making the victory happen.”
The statement added that the victory was achieved through the sacrifice of some Peshmerga who were killed and wounded, though did not give any specific numbers of the offensive’s casualties.
According to the latest records of the Ministry of Peshmerga, between June 10, 2014 and August 8, 2016, 1,505 Peshmerga have been killed in the fight against ISIS and 62 have disappeared. Also, 8,852 Peshmerga have been wounded. Of those, 950 have been sent abroad to receive treatment.
