ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Sulaimani province has had the largest number of investment projects in the Kurdistan Region in 2021, the province’s governor told Rudaw as the city marked its 237th anniversary on Sunday.

“Sulaimani has been able in 2021 to have the most investment projects in the Kurdistan Region, and our priority is those strategic projects that provide many job opportunities for people,” Haval Abubakir, governor of Sulaimani province, told Rudaw’s Shahyan Tahseen in a television interview.

According to data sent to Rudaw English by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Department of Media and Information on Sunday, the ninth cabinet of the KRG has allocated more than 434 billion dinars to projects in Sulaimani from 2019 to 2021.

Out of 279 projects funded by the government through the provincial budget and the investment budget, 116 of them were in Sulaimani province, marking the only time since the establishment of the KRG when the province has had more projects than Erbil and Duhok provinces.

The second-largest city in the Kurdistan Region, Sulaimani was founded by a Kurdish prince, Ibrahim Pasha, on November 14, 1784 to become the capital of what was at the time the Baban emirate. Experts and engineers from all over the region were commissioned to take part in the planning of the city, which has served as a center for education and literature throughout the centuries.

Many prominent pioneers of Kurdish poetry, thoughts, and national struggle have roots in the city. The KRG officially recognizes it as the ‘Capital of Culture.’ In 2019, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Sulaimani as a Creative City of Literature.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Qubad Talabani made a promise to “provide the nicest example of services to this dear city and honor the city’s reputation as a pioneer of art and culture” in a statement on Facebook on Saturday.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani called the city a “living center of freedom and enlightenment” in a tweet on Sunday.

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) co-chair Bafel Talabani, whose party is headquartered in the city, also took to Facebook to pledge to make the city a symbol of pride for all Kurds.

“I will put in all my efforts to end the negligence and shortcomings of this city and make fundamental changes in the service and all other sectors my priority,” he said.
