ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq and the Kurdistan Region continue to require assistance from the international community to ensure the eradication of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Region’s president said Sunday.
President Nechirvan Barzani received a German parliamentarian delegation and discussed bilateral ties as well as Germany’s mission in the global coalition, where both sides discussed the need to fight ISIS.
“The President stated that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region continue to need international assistance to eradicate terrorism,” his office stated, adding that ISIS in Iraq and Syria “is still a real threat.”
A series of deadly ISIS attacks in July that killed at least nine people in Iraq led Barzani to issue a statement warning that the terror group still “alarms of a serious threat” in the country.
The German delegation “expressed their country’s appreciation for the role of the Kurdistan Region and the heroism of the Peshmerga in defeating ISIS” to Barzani, who expressed hope that Berlin will extend its troop deployment mission to Iraq in October.
ISIS controlled vast parts of land in Iraq in 2014 but the group became fully devoid of territorial control in 2017. While the group lacks any territory, it still continues to pose security risks through abductions, hit-and-run attacks, and bombings.
The militants have taken shelter in a security vacuum in areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad, stretching across several provinces including Kirkuk, Salahaddin, and Diyala.
On Saturday, Iraq announced the killing of a “dangerous” ISIS leader in an air operation in Salahaddin province last month, calling the deceased the military commander of the terror group in the province.
