Masrour Barzani: We should consider Czech, Slovakia model of separation
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The head of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani said in a meeting with the Deputy Interior Minister of the Czech Republic that Kurdistan should take advantage of "the peaceful separation process between Czech and Slovakia."
"To separate [from Baghdad] we should take advantage of the peaceful separation process that took place between Czech and Slovakia," the KRSC quoted Barzani as saying in a meeting with Jiri Novaeck , deputy minister of interior of the Czech Republic on Thursday.
The dissolution of Czechoslovakia, which took effect on 1 January 1993, saw to the self-determined split of the federal state of Czechoslovakia into the independent nation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
"The ongoing violence and instability in the region today is because of a decision made a century ago without the consultation with the people in the region. Namely Europe ratifying an agreement to redraw the map of the [Middle East]," Barzani added, referring to the Sykes-Picot agreement signed in 1916 between the Great Britain and France during World War I as the Ottoman Empire was beginning to collapse.
Military aid to the Kurdish Peshmerga was also discussed between the two.
"The international community should prioritize its military aid for the Peshmerga," the announcement quoted Barzani saying.
For his part Novaeck vowed that the Czech Republic will continue helping the Kurdistan Region. "We understand the hard duty and necessities of the Kurdistan region at this critical stage."
"[My] country will attempt to pursue easier and quicker way to get the Peshmerga what they need," he added.
The announcement also mentioned that, in parts of their meeting, both sides discussed the relationship between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the central government in Baghdad.
The Kurdish Peshmerga has been fighting the Islamic State since mid-2014.
