PKK fighters killed in Turkish bombing in Kurdistan: Local official

SORAN, Kurdistan Region – Turkish warplanes on Monday bombed Kurdistan Region’s Bradost area, killing an unknown number of PKK fighters and one civilian.

“Turkish planes are bombing Bradost region and some other areas. Some guerrillas were killed in the bombing,” Ihsan Abdulqadir, town councilor from Sidakan, told Rudaw on Monday.

“The planes are bombing Mergarash Heights, Chinarka near the town of Sidakan,” he said.

The Turkish jets also targeted the vehicle of a civilian in Barmiza village, on the Kurdistan Region-Turkey border. The civilian was killed at the scene, Abdulqadir said.

The man who was killed has been identified as Himdad Othman. The 26-year old was married with one child. He was from Barmiza village in the Mergasor area.

Sidakan is located in northern Erbil province, about 90 kilometres northeast of the capital.

“The planes have targeted and burnt a Toyota Pickup truck belonging to the PKK guerrillas,” Abdulqadir added.

Turkey claimed to have “neutralized” eleven PKK fighters in air raids on the Kurdistan Region on Monday and another six within its own borders, according to state-run Anadolu Agency. Turkey’s armed forces use the word “neutralized” to refer to those killed, injured, or taken captive.

Turkish jets frequently target areas in the Kurdistan Region, claiming to target PKK positions. The PKK has its headquarters in Kurdistan Region’s Qandil mountains.

The PKK is a listed terrorist entity in Turkey, Europe, and the United States.
