ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday received Qatar’s Ambassador to Iraq Khalid Hamad al-Sality, discussing the possibility of opening a Qatari consulate in Erbil, as well as future investment opportunities in the Kurdistan Region.
Qatar first expressed an interest in opening a consulate in the Kurdistan Region in 2019, during a visit by Sality and a high profile business delegation to Erbil.
Barzani and Sality stressed both Doha and Erbil’s desire to develop bilateral relations, especially the possibility of Qatar investing in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s different sectors, according to a statement from the president’s office.
The latest developments in Baghdad’s political scene were discussed during the meeting with both sides emphasizing the importance of Iraq’s security and stability for the entire region.
Doha has maintained and improved its relations with Iraq and the semiautonomous Kurdistan Region, even discussing a free trade agreement with Baghdad earlier this year.
Barzani visited Qatar in October, meeting with top officials of the country, including Prime Minister Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The Kurdish president discussed the development of relations between Qatar, Iraq and, the Kurdistan Region in the fields of the economy, trade, agriculture, and tourism, including starting direct flights.
Qatar reopened its Baghdad embassy in 2015 for the first time since the Gulf War (1990-91) when several regional and world powers suspended diplomatic relations over Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.
